Create a Peaceful, Spirit-filled Home with Jesus: Why it’s important.

With the chaotic world we live in, it’s more important than ever to know how to create a spirit-filled home with Jesus.
Especially for us women, mothers, wives. We have an important role in this world and in our families. Sometimes it can feel like we’re running around like headless chickens with tight schedules, hoping that nothing comes up that throws every thing out of whack.
It goes without saying that our homes need to be peaceful spaces for us to reside and rest in, yes for our families, but also for us.
When I was initially writing my thoughts for this topic, I thought about how our homes need to be refreshing for our families, and then I realised. I wasn’t actually including myself in that thought.
We hold such an important role for our families yet we often forget that our homes need to be a restful, peaceful place for us too, maybe more than anyone.
Whether you are a working mother, or a stay at home mother, our primary place of work is not actually a physical place. We get home from being out in the world doing all the things, and we still have work to do.
So, we need to do what we can to make our homes places that bring us peace, calm, refuge, and spiritual growth. There are so many ways we can do this but before we get into that…
Let’s look at what the bible says about the home.
Isaiah 32:18
“Then my people will dwell in a peaceful place, in safe and secure dwellings.“
At its very basic level, we can see here that living in a peaceful, safe and secure home is a blessing from the Lord, and it is a good thing.

Joshua 24:15
“But If it doesn’t please you to worship the Lord, choose for yourselves today; Which will you worship – the gods your father worshipped beyond the Euphrates River or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living? As for me and my family, we will worship the Lord.”
We have a choice to make.
We choose who or what we worship and we can choose whether we are going to make a new way for our families regardless of what we’ve done previously or what we’ve learnt to do or been brought up doing. (I’ll go into the importance and power of this in a later blog post – can’t wait!)
Matthew 7:25
“The rain fell, the rivers rose, and the winds blew and pounded that house. Yet it didn’t collapse because it’s foundation was on the rock.”

Once we decide that we and our families will worship the Lord, we can then choose to rebuild our home on the firm foundation that is Christ. I have done this. It might seem so hard because you might feel like your home is too far gone or too set in its ways to change. But with small steps, that we will talk about shortly, you will see how simple and impactful it is. It’s also really hard to tear down the walls you have built in your home because we become attached to them. They are comfortable and known and we don’t like the uncomfortable and unknown.
Sometimes creating a spirit-filled home, means changing absolutely everything around the mindset surrounding your home.
And we don’t realize that huge impact that this has on our family and ourselves.
Proverbs 14:1
“Every wise woman builds her house but a foolish one tears it down with its own hands.“
I didn’t realize how influential I was in the home until I started making changes in my home and in the way I ran it. It made me realize if the changes I’m making is having such a huge impact, but negative mindsets must have been doing so too. This is why it’s so important to ask God for wisdom.
I will never get over reminding myself and the women I speak to and coach about the importance of our roles and women, wives and mothers in our home. The holy work we have been given. It’s NOT easy. But it is a part of the purpose that God has for our lives.
We are not slaves, we are called to serve.

Psalm 127:1
“Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labour in vain.“
Here’s the thing about our journey. We can make lots of practical changes in our home, but in my experience without the Lord, it doesn’t last. We cannot produce the same peace on our own. We must work with the Lord on our homes. We need to ask him to build our house up and we must take the practical steps too. It’s faith together with works. Works without faith is useless. Faith without works is dead.
Proverbs 24:3-4
“Through wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; and by knowledge its rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches.“
The spirit-filled home is built by wisdom, which comes from God.
With wisdom, comes understanding, and knowledge.
Deuteronomy 6:5-9
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. These words that I am giving you today are to be in your heart. Repeat them to your children. Talk about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”
You might be wondering, how can I do this though?
How can I teach these things to my children when I feel like I barely have my own time for devotionals. I get it. I think Luke 6:45 explains the perfect hack. It says:
…for his mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart.
It’s not about adding another thing to your to do list. If you can just discipline yourself, make time for yourself to get into the Word of God, that will be enough for you to teach your children. In a practical sense, this looks like your children asking their many questions, and our answers reflecting the Word of God. You don’t need to plan intricate bible lessons for your kids.
The BEST teachings you can give your kids are through you seeking the Lord.
I hope that relieves some of the pressure I’m sure you put on yourself.

Finally, Luke, 10:5-6 says:
“Whatever house you enter, first say, Peace to this household. If a person of peace is there, your peace will rest on him; but if not. It will return to you.”
This Bible verse is super interesting. It says if a person of peace is there, your peace will rest on him, if not it will return to you. This implies that
- We can either be a person of peace, or a person that is not of peace.
- If we are not of peace, and someone tries to bless us with peace it won’t land.
I wonder if this is the same for other things. The point is we need to be able to receive peace, if not, we can block our own blessing. A spirit-filled home is a peace filled home.
We’re not done on this topic yet. Now that we’ve dived into scriptures, let’s look at practical things you can do right now to create a peaceful, spirit-filled Home with Jesus.
Okay, we’ve dived into scripture which is the foundation of this topic, so in part two we’re going to look at how you can do this practically.
